Math 221 News

(back to course webpage)

This is archived information for Math 221 Sect 101 (Fall, 2002).

December 19, 2002: The final exams have been marked and the final grades submitted. The marks on the final were scaled up to bring the class average to about 67%, the same average the other sections were aiming for. I can't post the final marks here, but you should be able to retrieve them online from the university-wide marks pages soon. Have a good holiday!

December 17, 2002: I should have the final exams marked within the next few days. I'll leave another note here when I've calculated and submitted your final grades.

December 15, 2002: Good luck tomorrow!

December 14, 2002: Here's a summary of last night's review session. My office hours on Monday, December 16 are 10:30-12:30 and 1:30-3:30.

December 11, 2002: I have the Quiz #9s back now. They can be picked up during my office hours. In addition, the marks page has been updated with marks for Quiz #8 and #9.

December 6, 2002: The key for Quiz #9 is now available. I should have the marked quizzes back on Tuesday.

December 4, 2002: My office hours on Monday, December 9 are cancelled. Instead, my office hours for the remainder of the exam period will be:

Office Hours
Tues, Dec 10 10:30-11:30
Wed, Dec 11 10:30-12:30
Thurs, Dec 12 10:30-11:30
Fri, Dec 13 10:30-12:30
Mon, Dec 16 10:30-12:30, 1:30-3:30

The key for Quiz #9 will be available Friday evening. I should have the quizzes back from my marker by Tuesday, and they can be picked up during office hours after that. (I'll update the marks page with Quiz #8 and #9 marks at that time, too.)

Here are the details for our review session and final exam:

DateTimeLocation
Review Session Fri, Dec 13 6:00-8:00pm MATH 104
Final Exam Tues, Dec 17 12:00-2:30pm Student Recreation Centre (SRC) Rooms A & B

November 29, 2002: No more pencils, no more books, no more teachers' dirty looks!

Thank you for your attention this term. I hope you found the course enjoyable, and I hope you don't find the final exam too miserable. Good luck on it and on all your other exams!

The key for Homework Set #12 (including the questions assigned today) is available.

For those of you who haven't yet handed in Quiz #9, remember that it is due Tuesday at 4:00pm.

Also, I'll have office hours Monday from 10:30-12:30 and Tuesday from 10:30-11:30 if you have any questions. I'll keep those same office hours for the whole exam period and may add some extras if and when things get busy.

November 27, 2002: The due date for Quiz #9 has been extended to 4:00pm next Tuesday, December 3. I'll keep my normal office hours next week (Monday, 10:30-12:30 and Tuesday, 10:30-11:30) to answer any questions people have about it.

Our evening review session has been confirmed. It will be held the Friday before the exam on December 13, 6-7pm in MATH 104. Also, the final exam details appear to have been finalized. The final exam will be held Tuesday, December 17, 12:00-2:30pm in the Student Recreation Centre (SRC) rooms A and B.

November 25, 2002: One student found an error in Quiz #9, problem 5(e). The initial population vector should be x0=(10,0) not (1,0) to make it match Quiz #4, problem 4(b). If you've already done the problem using (1,0), that's fine, but the answer you get for x3 will be (64,21) instead of (640,210).

November 23, 2002: Oops. I forgot to put the key for Quiz #8 up yesterday.

November 22, 2002: Quiz #9 was handed out today and is due in one week, on Friday, November 29. The key for Homework Set #11 is available, and the key for Quiz #8 will be up later today.

We have a tenatively scheduled review session the evening of Friday, December 13 from 6-7pm. Because Classroom Services is currently busy scheduling final exams, we may not know the exact date, time, and location until next week (or possibly later).

November 21, 2002: Quiz #9 is now available online, for those who want to get an early start. I'll be handing out the paper copy in class tomorrow, and it'll be due Friday, November 29.

November 20, 2002: Reminder: Please bring a pencil to class on Friday to fill out instructor evaluation forms. Thanks! Quiz #9 is ready, but the photocopier was broken, so I'll hand it out next class. It'll be due Friday, November 29, the last day of classes. The keys for Quiz #8 and Homework Set #11 will be available on Friday.

November 19, 2002: The marks page has been updated with marks for Quiz #7 and Midterm #2. Please check that my record of your grades matches your own record of your grades.

November 13, 2002: Not much news today. I handed back Midterm #2 (questions, key) and Quiz #7 (key). I also handed out Quiz #8.

November 12, 2002: I'll be handing back the marked midterms tomorrow.

The key for Quiz #7 in PDF and the key for Midterm #2 in PDF are now available. (The midterm question paper is available, too, but I'll be handing back copies with your marked exams tomorrow.)

November 8, 2002: The two slides from today's class are available in PDF (2 slides per page).

November 7, 2002: Hooray! No more midterms! Of course, now there's that final exam thing to worry about...

I should have the midterm papers graded and returned for next Wednesday. The midterm question paper and key aren't yet available online, but both of them should be up by Tuesday. Also, the "check your marks" page has been updated with Quiz #5 and #6 marks.

November 5, 2002: A summary of last night's review session is now available. Good luck tomorrow!

November 4, 2002: Midterm #2 is in two days, on Wednesday, November 6. It will be held in class in room MATX 1100 at 9:00-9:50am. No calculators, notes, textbooks, formula sheets, or even scrap paper are allowed. Just bring yourself and your writing instruments. I'll supply exam books and extra scrap paper. Don't forget that Quiz #7 is due the same day.

November 1, 2002: The key for Quiz #6 is available in PDF.

October 31, 2002: PDF versions of Homework Solution Sets #9 and #10 are now available. The key for Quiz #6 will be up Friday evening.

October 30, 2002: Midterm #2 is in one week, on Wednesday, November 6.

My extended office hours for next week are:

Mon, Nov 410:30-12:30, 1:00-3:00
Tues, Nov 510:30-12:30

Also, I should be in my office most of the day Thursday and Friday. Send me an e-mail if you want to meet one of those days.

There will be an (optional) review session Monday, November 4 in the evening from 6:00-7:00pm in Math 100 (the first floor of the Math Building, across the street from the Math Annex). Bring along any questions you'd like answered or problems you'd like me to work through.

A few students have expressed interest in putting together a study group (for the midterm, maybe, but more for the final exam). If you are interested in talking to other students about organizing a study group, send me an e-mail, and I'll add your e-mail address to the list.

October 26, 2002: The key for Quiz #5 is available in PDF.

October 25, 2002: The solutions for Homework Set #8 are now available in PDF. The key for Quiz #5 will be up later today.

Midterm #2 is a little less than two weeks away. It will be held on Wednesday, November 6 in our normal classroom at the normal class time. We will have an evening review session on Monday, November 4. The room and time have just been confirmed: the room is MATH 100 (on the ground floor of the Mathematics Building), and the time is 6:00-7:00pm.

Note that next week, probably for Monday or Wednesday's class, I plan to use overhead slides to speed us through part of Chapter 5. I'll try to get the slides up the evening before, so watch the webpage to get a copy before class.

Have a good weekend!

October 18, 2002: The key for Quiz #4 is now avaiable in PDF. Have a great weekend!

October 17, 2002: Correction: One student found an error on Quiz #5. In Problem #2, the matrix A should be:

 12061
01131
A=11-201
11-100
-2-243-1

That is, the element in row 3, column 4 should be 0 (not 2), and the element in row 5, column 4 should be 3 (not -1). The partially reduced augmented matrix [A | I] is correct, so this change only makes a difference in part (c) when you try to check your work by multiplying your inverse by the original matrix A.

The online copy of the quiz available below already has this correction incorporated.

Also, the Homework Set #7 Solutions are available in PDF a little early. The key for Quiz #4 will be up tomorrow afternoon.

October 11, 2002: Hooray! Long weekend! The answers for the last homework are available in PDF. Remember that Quiz #4 is due on Wednesday, October 16, the first class back after the long weekend. I'll have extended office hours on Tuesday, October 15 from 10:30-12:30 to answer any last-minute questions about it.

Have a good Thanksgiving Weekend!

October 7, 2002: Not much news today, for a change. I'll hand back the midterms and Quiz #3 next class. There is not a quiz due next class. Instead, I'll be handing out Quiz #4 then, and it'll be due in a week (October 16).

October 4, 2002: Update: Quiz #3 solutions are now available in PDF.

Sorry about my confusion during today's lecture. After the cold medication wore off, I realized the proof I gave was complete. I was going on to prove the converse when I'd never even claimed the converse was true. (It is true, but we need a couple more facts before we can prove it.) Anyway, we'll get back on track on Monday.

The midterm solutions are available as a PDF file. You can also get a copy of the midterm questions in PDF, too, if you don't already have a copy. The Quiz #3 solutions are available in PDF as well.

Have a good (midterm-free) weekend, and see you Monday!

October 3, 2002: Thank goodness that's over with! Now things can get back to normal until the next midterm (Wednesday, November 6). If you handed in your copy of the midterm question paper, you can get it in PDF. The answer key isn't available quite yet but will be soon.

October 1, 2002: The summary of last night's review session has been updated with some more comments about augmented versus coefficient matrices and a few examples you can look over.

September 30, 2002: The first midterm is next class, Wednesday, October 2. Good luck! It will be held in the normal classroom (Math Annex Room 1100)) at 9:00-9:50am. It will cover Sections 1.1-1.9 and 2.1 and all material we've covered in class. No calculators, notes, textbooks, "cheatsheets", or even scrap paper are allowed. Just bring yourself and your writing instruments. I'll supply exam books and extra paper for scrap. Don't forget that Quiz #3 is due the same day!

For those who missed tonight's review session, we just went over some questions people had and did a few sample problems on the board. You can see my vague and inaccurate recollection of what we talked about. I'll try to fill in some more detail tomorrow, so check back then.

September 27, 2002: Update: The answer key for Quiz #2 and the solutions for Homework Set #5 (the new homework assigned today) are now available (in PDF).

The midterm is Wednesday, October 2. It will be held in class in room MATX 1100 at 9:00-9:50am.

There will be an (optional) review session Monday evening from 6:00-7:00pm in Math 203 (the second floor of the Math Building, across the street from the Math Annex).

The answer keys for Homework Set #4, Homework Set #5, and Quiz #2 are all available in PDF. Note that Homework Set #5 includes the questions from Section 1.8 that I assigned today as well as some additional questions from Section 2.1 as listed on the main course webpage.

September 25, 2002: There's lots of news today!

First, the midterm is in one week. It will be held in class on Wednesday, October 2. Be sure to contact me in advance if you cannot write it at that time. It will cover Sections 1.1-1.9 and 2.1 of the textbook and all the material we study in class up until the end of Monday's class. It will be closed book, closed notes, no calculators. Just bring yourself, your writing instrument, and optionally an eraser. I'll supply scrap paper and a collection of absolutely fascinating exam questions.

Second, Quiz #3 has been handed out and is due in class on the same day as the midterm. You can get help on specific questions during office hours, and if you hand the whole thing in to me on Monday or Tuesday, I'll let you peek at the answer key.

Third, as already mentioned, our evening review session is confirmed. It will be Monday, September 30 at 6-7pm in MATH 203.

Finally, my extended office hours for this week and next are:

Fri, Sept 2710:30-12:30
Mon, Sept 3010:30-12:30
Tues, Oct 110:30-12:30

September 23, 2002: Our evening review session is confirmed. It will be Monday, September 30 at 6-7pm in MATH 203. (That's on the second floor of the Math building, just north of the Math Annex.)

Quiz #1 has been marked. I'll hand it back on Wednesday. Remember that Quiz #2 is due Wednesday, too, and I'll be handing out Quiz #3 at the same time.

September 20, 2002: As I mentioned today, the first midterm is on Wednesday, October 2 at 9:00-9:50am in our usual classroom MATX 1100. Be sure to contact me in advance if you cannot write it at that time.

Also, I am trying to schedule an evening review session. It will most likely be on Monday, September 30 at 6-7pm in either the Math or Math Annex building. I'll make a further announcement in class and on this webpage when the details are finalized.

Have a good weekend!

September 18, 2002: I've given the quiz papers to my marker. They should be marked by Monday at 10:00am, and I'll hand them back next Wednesday (or you can stop by during office hours to pick yours up early). Here's a handwritten solution key [no longer available].

September 16, 2002: The first quiz is due at the beginning of class on Wednesday (September 18). Also, according to the academic calendar, tomorrow (September 17) is the last day to switch between credit and audit and to withdraw without getting a "W" recorded on your academic record, at least for Term 1 courses.

September 13, 2002: There's no special news today. The Homework Set #2 solutions are available in PDF. Have a great weekend, and see you on Monday!

September 11, 2002: The first quiz has been handed out. Everybody panic! It is due in one week, on Wednesday, September 18 at the beginning of class.

New Office Hours: My original office hours were rather inconvenient for getting help with the quiz. My office hours this week and next will be as follows:

Wed, Sept 1110:30-12:30
Mon, Sept 1610:30-12:30
Tues, Sept 1710:30-11:30
Wed, Sept 18No office hours

If next week's schedule works well, I will change my regular office hours to Mondays and Tuesdays. Please note that you can always schedule another appointment by e-mail.

September 9, 2002: The key for homework set #1 is available in PDF format. I've also taped a copy to my office door. Note: The university is holding a September 11 memorial service on Wednesday at 9:00am. As far as I know, classes are not canceled, so I'll hold class at the normal time, and I won't mind if people arrive late.

September 6, 2002: Thank you for your patience today. I'm really pleased we covered so much material. The slides from today (and a few from Wednesday) are available in PDF (4 slides per page) or other formats.

Reminder: The homework I assign in class is not for credit and need not be handed in. Only the take-home quizzes are worth marks, and I'll hand out the first quiz next Wednesday.

September 4, 2002: Welcome back! I hope you had a great summer. There's not much of substance here now, but that will change as the course progresses. In the near future, you'll be able to find lists of current and future homework assignments, answer keys for take-home quizzes and (selected) homework, and copies of course handouts.

This is archived information for Math 221 Sect 101 (Fall, 2002).
